PREMPRO CLASS ACTION NOTICE
A class action lawsuit has been filed against Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, the maker of Prempro and hormone replacement therapies for unintended side effects (increased breast cancer rates) and failure to alert consumers of these risks and recall Prempro. This suit has been filed on behalf of families of breast cancer victims who took these drugs.
Prempro, and combined hormone replacement therapy of estrogen and progesterone, has been linked to breast cancer and stroke. An estimated 100,000 extra breast cancers have been caused over the past ten years among women aged from hormone replacement therapy. In Spring 2006, the National Institutes of Health published a wide scale study of these health effects.
Prempro is manufactured by Wyeth and accounted for $890 million of the company's $13.9 billion in sales in 2006. Approximately six million women have taken Prempro to treat menopause-related symptoms. It is important to understand that Prempro is a Combined Hormone Replacement Therapy (CHRT) because it consists of both an estrogen and progesterone, unlike conventional hormone replacement therapies (HRT), which consist of just one hormone.
Attorneys representing Prempro patients claim that Wyeth Pharmaceuticals is responsible because they resisted efforts to fully investigate the risks and negligently failed to alert patients of the health risks posed by these drugs.
If you have taken hormone replacement therapy for an extended period, you may have an increased risk of breast cancer.
A federally funded study by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) was halted prematurely when researchers determined the side effects of Prempro were so severe that they could no longer give the pharmaceutical to patients.
The study determined that women who were given Prempro were more likely to develop serious problems compared to those in the placebo group. The statistics are alarming:
- 26% increase in breast cancer
- 41% increase in strokes
- 100% increase in blood clots (leg, arm, brain, heart)
- 22% increase in incidents of cardiovascular disease
If you have taken these drugs, you should consider getting a full check up and a mammogram and/or a breast exam.
The most common symptoms of breast cancer are:
- A lump or thickening in or near the breast or in the underarm area.
- A change in the size or shape of the breast.
- A discharge from the nipple.
- A change in the color or feel of the skin of the breast, areola, or nipple (dimpled, puckered, or scaly).
If you or a member of your family has breast cancer and has taken hormone replacement therapy drugs such as Premarin, Provera and Prempro, then you may qualify for a class action claim.
In America today there are thousands of class actions and billions of dollars in unclaimed monies available for victims. If you have been wronged by a major corporation, you may be entitled to compensation for treatments and pain and suffering.
